Today, we had the pleasure of talking to Karthika, one of the girls protagonists of the documentary Daughters of Destiny, available on Netflix.

To put us in context, Daughters of Destiny shows us the seven-year follow-up of the lives of five girls who go to a school called Shanti Bhavan which was founded and created by Abraham George, aimed at those low social class children called “untouchables” of southern India, exactly in Bangalore.

The aim is to give children in the area the opportunity to enjoy a quality education that has an impact on obtaining a university degree in the future. This implies that the fate of these children may change, they are not predestined to what their social class imposes on them. They will be able to have a decent job and thus, help their families in the economic field to be able to get out of poverty minimally. Also note that it is not all as easy as it seems, as these girls and all the students of Shanti Bhavan, once graduated have to live with the dilemmas they encountered along the way.

Ever since I started watching the documentary I fell in love with Thenmozhi, one of the protagonist girls, who is currently in 10th grade, so she is about 16-17 years old. She is a charming, sincere and tender girl, who loves animals and in the future wants to dedicate herself to veterinary medicine.

Being able to follow the trajectory of these girls has been amazing. Also, to be able to see the reality in which they live and the joy they transmit despite the precarious life situations they suffer. I consider it a documentary that fills your heart with love and humility, a documentary that makes you reflect on your own life, on what you have, on the appreciation of the humanitarian part that we sometimes lack, on fortune that we have to have these living conditions. You become aware and learn to value everything you have; what surrounds you.

Today, with Karthika on screen, she couldn’t stop thinking about what her life has been like, and the hardships she’s had and possibly will have (less often). It is admirable the courage with which they face life, they are fighters, who draw strength from wherever they are to be able to move forward in some way. They should be our example to follow; in fact, for me they already are.

I've always been interested in volunteering elsewhere on the planet, and after watching the documentary I'm even more looking forward to it. Hopefully one day, I can contribute my bit in schools like Shanti Bhavan. I have no doubt it will be one of the best experiences of my life.

Daughters of Destiny, is a documentary that brings you learning in every way; a documentary that everyone should watch.
